Abstract
Human chorionic gonadopin (hCG) consists of an alpha and beta chain, dissociable by hypertonic urea solutions. The former is identical with the alpha chain in pituitary LH, FSH and TSH of the pituitary gland; The beta chain confers the specific biologic activity of hCG.
The general conception, radioimmunoassay (RIA) and clinical application for the hCG n-subunit were briefly described. The development of a RIA for the j3-subunit of hCG by Vaitukaitis and co-worker in 1972 made it possible to measure minute amounts of hCG in serum without interference from LH.
It is proven useful for diagnosis of very early pregnancy, impending abortion, ectopic pregnancy and especially follow up of chorionic tumor..
